4 Common Signs of Power Transformer Problems

Sometimes, power transformer problems aren't immediately obvious. Your transformer might still work; however, things aren't quite right. The unit might need to be repaired or even replaced.

Read on to learn about some common transformer problems that might signal that your unit is damaged or about to reach the end of its working life.

1. Changes in Working Noise

Transformers don't operate silently. They do make some noise. However, sometimes, a fault can change the noises a unit makes. For example, your transformer might have a problem if the volume of its operating noise increases a lot. If the unit usually emits a constant noise but is now making intermittent noises, then this can also be a problem. Also, listen out for changes in pitch. If the noise your transformer makes has a higher or lower pitch than usual, then it has a problem somewhere.

2. Changes in Vibrations

Transformers naturally vibrate a little as they operate. These vibrations should be subtle; the unit shouldn't move around too much when it works. If your transformer seems to be vibrating a lot more than usual, then it has a problem. Sometimes, this is a simple fix. You simply need to have the unit's shock-absorbing feet or pads replaced because they have worn down too much to control its vibrations.

However, excess movement can be a sign that a part inside the unit is failing or has broken. Wear and damage can affect how smoothly a transformer runs. You might need a new part or a new unit.

3. Damage From Surges

Power surges can cause obvious damage to transformers. They can break a unit. However, sometimes, a surge will simply leave behind some signs of damage.

For example, if the coils on your unit seem to have shifted out of position, even slightly, then the unit might have surge damage. This damage might get worse or might affect other parts. It needs a timely investigation.

4. Signs of Excess Heat Exposure

Transformers contain insulation materials to help units cope with heat. As units age, these materials can give you signs that their transformers have been dealing with too much heat for too long and might soon fail.

For example, if the colour of an insulation material is different at its top and at its base, then your unit might have excess heat problems. Heat rises. It will discolour the top of a material more strongly than the bottom.
